The good news is that mental math speed is a trainable skill, not a fixed talent, and a handful of techniques account for most of the improvement.
Why bother when everyone has a calculator
Mental math isn't about replacing calculators — it's about having a fast internal check on whether an answer looks right. If a spreadsheet says a 20% tip on $84 is $42, someone who can estimate quickly catches the error instantly, calculator or not. It's also just faster: reaching for a phone to compute 9 × 7 takes longer than knowing it.
Break numbers apart instead of carrying digits
Most people were taught column addition, which is great on paper but slow in your head because it forces you to carry digits right-to-left. Mentally, it's faster to work left-to-right and round to friendly numbers:
38 + 47→ think38 + 50 − 3= 8567 − 29→ think67 − 30 + 1= 38123 + 456→ add hundreds (500), tens (70), ones (9) = 579
Rounding to a nearby multiple of 10 and correcting afterward is almost always faster than exact carrying.

It forces your brain to reach for the fast shortcut instead of the slow, deliberate calculation every single time.
Reading your score, streak, and difficulty level
A streak counter rewards consecutive correct answers, which nudges you to slow down fractionally when you're unsure rather than guessing — a wrong guess breaks the streak and costs more than the second it takes to double-check. Moving up a difficulty level introduces larger numbers and more operations (subtraction and multiplication alongside addition), which is the right progression once single-digit and two-digit addition feel instant rather than effortful.
What to focus on first
If you're starting from scratch, prioritize in this order: two-digit addition and subtraction using the rounding trick above, then the 5/9/11 multiplication shortcuts, then percentage estimation (10% is just moving the decimal point; 5% is half of that; 15% is 10% + 5%).
